How to do it

Today, seek out three opportunities to stand instead of sit. If you normally sit while riding the bus or train, stand for part of the ride. If it's your habit to make phone calls from a cozy perch in your kitchen or office chair, stand up for these calls instead.

Why it matters

People who sit most of the day tend to have larger waists than those who spend less time in a chair. A larger waistline increases the risk of developing illnesses such as cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. When you stand, you engage many more muscles, which requires physical exertion.

Fun fact

Although it is nearly impossible for a person to sleep standing up, horses almost always do.
