Everyday Well-Being

List 1 healthy replacement for a snack with your favorite texture, like carrots instead of chips.

How to do it

Almost everyone has a favorite less-than-healthy snack with a texture that's crunchy, crispy, creamy, gooey, or chewy. Once you've identified yours, list one replacement that's more nutritious and can satisfy your desire for that texture. For example, carrots, celery, and crisp apple slices offer great crunch and are better for you than chips; low- or nonfat yogurt is a smooth, creamy stand-in for ice cream; and popcorn (without butter and with very minimal salt or none at all) is a chewy alternative to pre-packaged snack bars that often contain saturated fats and sugar.

Why it matters

Taste isn't the only game in town when it comes to enjoying our food! Texture also plays a big part, and especially when we have cravings for our favorite snacks. Being mindful of which texture you respond to in these snacks can help you pick healthier alternatives that are lower in salt, sugar, and fat.

Fun fact

It's believed that Genghis Khan (founder of the Mongol Empire) and his armies lived on yogurt.
