Write the serving size on the front of the box or bag of your favorite snack.

How to do it

The next time you're in the kitchen today, open your cupboard or refrigerator to find that favorite snack. Using a permanent marker, write the serving size on the front of the box or bag - for example, 13 tortilla chips is one serving. Be sure to write it in a prominent place where you'll notice the serving size each time you grab it. Can't write on the container? Use a piece of tape or a sticky note to put the serving size in a prominent place.

Why it matters

Nutrition labels are very helpful - if we pay attention to them to begin with and then remember what they say. When information from that label isn't top of mind, it's easy to double or triple the serving size without realizing how much we're eating. You're more likely to be mindful about what you're eating and keep snack portions in check if the serving size is written front and center on the box, bag, or container.

Fun fact

Anthropologists believe that Peruvians were eating popcorn as a snack as far back as 6,500 years ago! They didn't have poppers, so they likely roasted their corn kernels.
