How to do it

Pull all the foods out of your refrigerator, and throw away anything that's past the expiration date. But don't rely solely on dates: If something smells bad, looks off, or has mold, toss it (adding any recyclable containers to your recycling bin). Before putting things back, wipe down the shelves and drawers with a mild cleanser. Then put healthy foods front and center where you can spot them quickly. Before closing the door, check that your fridge is 40 degrees Fahrenheit (4 degrees Celsius) or cooler.

Why it matters

A funky-smelling fridge is no fun for anyone! By paying attention to expiration dates, keeping foods at the right temperature, and storing leftovers in tightly sealed containers, you can greatly lower your risk of food poisoning and other food-borne illnesses. Plus, having a less cluttered refrigerator means that you'll be better able to find the healthy snacks you want.

Fun fact

Although the first refrigerators for home use were introduced in the 1920s, the first refrigerator magnet patent wasn't issued until the 1970s.
